What Does Sleep Dentistry Do?

Sleep dentistry is a dental approach that uses sedation or anaesthesia to induce patients into relaxation, or sleeping. There are many types of sleep dentistry that are used for different needs. It's a completely safe service that must be administered by a trained sedationist. The level of sedation provided is also tailored to accommodate the service type.

Who is Sleep Dentistry for?

Sleep dentistry is well known to treat dental anxiety, as it's a common reason behind dental discomfort. It can be why someone misses or delays a dental appointment. However, beyond this sleep dentistry is used to support many circumstances.

See how sleep dentistry helps with:

  • Patients with moderate to major dental anxiety or phobia
  • Patients requiring complex or lengthy procedures, such as implants or extractions
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex, making routine treatments particularly difficult
  • Patients who have avoided the dentist for years, needing to treat dental concerns in a single visit

Oral Sedation

To alleviate dental stress and anxiety, oral sedation is a commonly used method. It keeps the patient more calm during the procedure, while also allowing them to remain awake.

By leaving the patient in a drowsy state, it helps minimise any discomfort during the process. Our team may recommend this for people who have moderate dental anxiety, as well as straightforward procedures.

*The sedation above is included in the service for eligible patients only. For more information get in touch with our team at Avira Dental.

IV Sedation (Twilight state)

This type is for patients undergoing more intensive procedures, have significant treatment anxiety, or a strong gag reflex. As implied by its name, it induces the patient into a dream-like state. This where the individual is awake and conscious, yet feels they are dreaming. At Avira Dental, our in-house sedationist works to both administer the treatment, and frequently monitor for safety throughout.

Once the treatment is complete, the patient will be brought into our dedicated recovery room. This way it allows for an easier transition from a deep dream-like state, all the way to a conscious alert state.

General Anaesthesia (GA)

GA is employed for services that are considered as under extreme circumstances. This is when the procedure is either intensive, or the patient has a disability, is young or has extreme fear.

GA induces the patient into an unconscious state, making them immobile and the procedure pain-free. The anaesthesia will be administered by a specialised anesthesiologist for a safe and effective treatment.

*Medicare rebate is applicable for the cost of the above. For more details on pricing, see our comprehensive price list here.

Identifying the Risks: The Downsides of Sleep Dentistry

Dental anaesthesia and dental sedation techniques are completely safe treatments. The specialist performing the sleep dentistry is fully qualified in both providing, and monitoring it. However, as with any procedure, these come with many risks. Here at Avira Dental, we pride ourselves on keeping our clients completely informed on the risks of every service.

See some challenges below:

  • Sickness After the treatment, some may experience nausea and vomiting. This is an especially common symptom for those who had undergone anaesthesia and usually subsides.
  • Drowsiness In the 24 hours after the treatment, feeling lightheaded or drowsy is a very normal side effect. This is most commonly experienced by those who had anaesthesia.
  • Mouth dryness Upon initial recovery, many experience dryness and soreness causing mouth discomfort. These mouth symptoms are not long term, typically subsiding.
  • Allergic reaction In rare cases, some individuals may have an allergic reaction to the administered sedative. However, this is usually detected within the initial consultation stage.

FAQs

What's the Difference Between Sleep Dentistry and Sleep Disorder Dentistry?+

While both treatments sound similar, these two are distinctly different. Sleep disorder dentistry is done to address conditions that impact someone's ability to sleep, like snoring. This is done through custom oral devices which are designed to keep the airway open. To compare, sleep dentistry is when dental sleep medicine induces a relaxed, or unconscious state during a dental procedure.

How Long Does Recovery Take After Sleep Dentistry?+

The amount of time it takes to recover depends on the type of treatment. Oral sedation has the fastest recovery, as this typically lingers for a few hours. However, twilight sedation requires a day long recovery, with typically an hour spent in the recovery room. An anaesthesia recovery is more intensive, providing discomfort that can go for days to weeks.

Do I Need Someone to Drive Me Home After Sleep Dentistry?+

Yes, arranging a lift home after your appointment is strongly recommended. Depending on the sedation used, you may still feel drowsy or lightheaded following your procedure. For IV sedation and general anaesthesia, you must have a trusted person escort you home. They must also stay with you for the rest of the day.
