What is Root Canal Therapy?

Otherwise known as an endodontic treatment, the infected dental pulp is removed and later cleaned. The process is designed to disinfect these root canals, sealing the tooth through the placement of a dental crown. By following this, we prevent further problems like an abscessed tooth (pockets of pus), bone loss, and, later, tooth loss.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

For patient comfort, the procedure will be completed either under a sedation, or anesthesia of their choice. To access the infected pulp, the dentist will create a small incision for an access point within the tooth's crown. This, then, allows for the infected dental pulp to be then removed. Once done, the teeth are sealed, and later, finished with a dental crown.

Your Natural Tooth

Root Canal Therapy Preserved. The existing tooth structure stays in the jawbone and continues to function as normal.
Dental Implant Removed. The tooth is extracted first, and an artificial replacement is surgically inserted in its place.

Recovery Period

Root Canal Therapy Most patients feel settled within 1-3 days. Full recovery is generally under one week.
Dental Implant Recovery from extraction takes 3-4 weeks. The process of Osseointegration (bone fusing to the implant) takes several months before the final crown is placed.

Bone Preservation

Root Canal Therapy The natural root remains in the jawbone, maintaining density and preventing bone loss over time.
Dental Implant The implant post preserves bone long term, but the extraction can be a risk to the bone structure.

Feel and Function

Root Canal Therapy The tooth feels and functions as it always has. No adjustment period required.
Dental Implant Implants closely replicate natural teeth, but some patients notice a difference in feel.

Best Suited For

Root Canal Therapy Teeth where enough healthy structure remains and the surrounding bone and gums are stable.
Dental Implant Teeth that are too damaged, fractured below the gum line, or compromised beyond saving.

Tooth Infection Treatments in Penrith: The Step by Step Process

At Avira Dental, we look to clarity from the initial consultation, all the way to the tooth nerve treatment. Whether this may come down to helping you know the treatment process, or addressing any questions or concerns that you may have.

See our root canal process:

The Digital Consultation

During the dental exam, we use the X-ray technology of the 3D CBCT to scan tooth structure and anatomy. This provides a precise, three-dimensional view of the teeth, such as its root structure and extent of the infection. By doing so, it helps us to know the appropriate steps to take ahead.

*Our comprehensive consultation stage is designed to see whether a complete extraction is the right fit for you. Our dentist will explore all options prior to opting for a complete tooth removal.

Preparation for Treatment

Depending on your choice of anesthesia, or a sedation, this will be administered. When a root canal can be a challenging, or painful experience, we aim to potentially alleviate these. Our team will communicate the type of treatment preparation beforehand.

The Treatment Itself

Before the root canal process, the tooth is isolated by a rubber sheet that has been placed around it. This prevents any disruptions to the process, protecting it from the bacteria present in saliva. Then, a small hole is drilled through the top of the mouth to reach the pulp chamber. This way, it can be removed, which allows the root canal to be cleaned completely.

Once done, the tooth is then shaped and disinfected in preparation for the tooth crown. Then, a temporary filling is placed until a permanent tooth crown can be.

The Tooth Crown

On the next visit, the temporary crowns are removed. This is replaced by an expert dental cement or adhesive which is tailored according to the teeth's colour, fit and bite. By doing so, it offers a sustainable dental solution for the long-term.

Post-Treatment Advice

Once the treatment is complete, sensitivity with chewing or tenderness can be common within the first 2 weeks. At this stage, we provide custom dental care advice which could help with your recovery process. We aim to also answer any aftercare questions that you may raise.

*Please note that the above is a general overview of our tooth extraction process in Penrith. On the day of service, this process may be adjusted by our dental professionals accordingly. Along with this, tooth replacement options may also be discussed during treatment.

What Makes Root Canal Therapy in Penrith Worth It?

Immediate, Long-Lasting Relief

A dental pulp disease can quickly spread to both surrounding tissue, as well as bone. This makes taking fast action essential for overall dental wellbeing. Through the fast infection removal, it helps offer relief from dental pain.

Your Natural Tooth Stays Where It Belongs

When it comes to root canal therapy, it preserves the existing tooth root. This is especially important because no implant, bridge, or denture can replicate its feel, function or bone-preserving quality.

Protection for the Surrounding Structure

Since an infection can move through the jawbone, early intervention helps ensure that the dental structure is protected. It offers prevention against neighboring teeth and gum tissue from being at risk.

What are Some of the Risks Associated With Root Canal Therapy?

As with any clinical procedure, there are some risks to know of before treatment, helping you to keep completely informed.

See the root canal therapy risks:

  • Reinfection In rare cases, the seal may not hold as a result of leaking or breakages. Alongside with the added risk of bacteria entry as a result of the presence of difficult canals.
  • Post-Treatment Inflammation There is a risk of bacteria existing in canal spaces. This causes inflammation within tissue neighboring the tooth's root.
  • Instrument Fracture In very rare cases, there's a risk of precision instruments causing a fragment within the tooth's canal. This is because of the fine nature of dental files used to clean canals.
  • Incomplete Seal In the event where root canals aren't cleaned correctly, this causes the potential for bacteria to enter. The tooth root must be properly disinfected and sealed to the tip.
