Veneers

This is a cosmetic dental treatment in which a thin layer of porcelain or composite material is placed on the surface of the teeth to enhance their appearance and function.

Veneers are bonded directly to the tooth surface and can be made from different materials. Porcelain veneers are highly durable and resistant to wear and staining, while composite veneers can often be completed in a single visit, offering a quicker and more cost-effective solution.

See the risks of this procedure:

  • Once the veneers have been placed, you may experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold meals
  • Regularly maintain basic oral care like brushing, and flossing as this impacts the lifespan of the procedure
  • Given that the process needs an enamel removal, it can’t be replaced which makes the process irreversible
  • Be wary of habits that apply unnecessary force to veneers, such as teeth clenching or grinding
  • The primary materials (Composite and Porcelain) can’t be whitened, let your dental provider know if you need whitening prior
  • Consuming hard foods such as lollies, or candies can cause tooth chipping, cracking or other issues
  • Some individuals have allergic reactions to adhesive, and other bonds needed in the procedure

Composite Veneers

  • Since this is a porous material, composite veneers are more prone to staining from beverages, like coffee or tea
  • The material type of these veneers are more likely to break, such as having chips or fractures

Custom Implants

For advanced yet seamless teeth, many opt for a solution that can look extremely natural. However, the implant type depends on your dental needs. The full arch implants replace all teeth, acting as an alternative to traditional dentures. On the other hand, a single tooth implant replaces just one “bad” tooth.

See risks of this procedure:

  • There’s a risk of failed osseointegration, otherwise known as when implants don’t fuse properly with the jawbone
  • Infection can be caused by bacteria at the site of the implant, otherwise known as peri-implantitis
  • In case there is a low bone density, a bone graft may be needed for the treatment to be done
  • It’s essential to maintain basic oral hygiene practices, which include regular brushing or flossing
  • Smoking increases the risk of implant failure, as it prevents you from healing properly
  • This procedure poses a risk of gum recession, causing problems like infections and cavities
  • When placed in close proximity to gums, this can cause permanent nerve damage (extremely rare)
  • Temporary side effects such as bruising, bleeding are common post-surgery

Clear Aligner treatment (Invisalign)

This teeth straightening treatment is an invisible alternative to traditional braces. Popular for providing a versatile, as well a faster teeth solution for many. Worn for the majority of the day, the invisalign teeth alignment is a completely removable treatment. However, there are risks to consider.

See these below:

  • There’s a risk of mild discomfort during and after-treatment, especially when wearing a new set
  • Temporary tooth sensitivity when exposed to hot or cold drinks
  • Poor oral hygiene increases the chances of tooth decay, cavities or diseases
  • Must maintain a commitment to wearing aligners 20-22 hours a day (Impacts the end result)
  • During the first week or longer, you may experience a minor lisp or other speech challenges
  • Root resorption (rare) occurs when the pressure applied by invisalign shortens the teeth roots

Resin Bonding

To repair chips, gaps, or other teeth concerns, this is a more practical solution for many individuals. The resin bonding process works through the application of the tooth resin by using a bonding adhesive. It’s typically completed to revise smaller dental imperfections.

See the procedure risks below:

  • Unlike permanent alternatives like veneers, this has a shorter lifespan of 5-10 years and demands more frequent dental visits
  • Poor oral hygiene increases the chances of tooth decay beneath the bond, cavities or diseases
  • When applied too closely to the gums, this can lead to irritation and discomfort
  • Dietary habits like coffee can stain teeth, and hard foods can cause breakage
  • Poor habits like teeth biting, or grinding make teeth more prone to fractures or chips
  • Post-procedure, there may be sensitivity to hot or cold beverages
  • Some individuals experience allergic reactions in response to the bonds

Anaesthesia and Sedation (Invasive Dental Procedures)

Some dental procedures require pain management medications. This ranges from oral sedation, IV sedation or anaesthesia. All of these are applied to more invasive dental procedures, including custom implants and veneers. However, it’s important to note that these come alongside risks.

See these below:

  • Temporary side effects directly post-treatment include but aren’t limited to nausea, dizziness, fatigue
  • In extremely rare cases individuals have allergic reactions, which can be life threatening
  • Temporary, or in rare cases, prolonged numbness to nerves
