If you're wondering when to schedule that first dental visit, you're not alone. According to the Australian Dental Association, there are two scenarios that could be the "Perfect time." It's recommended to book an appointment when your child's first tooth appears, or on their first birthday.
You may be wondering, "Isn't 1 or younger just a little too early?" However, booking a dental visit early on helps make your child more comfortable.
As a general rule of thumb, slow introductions grow your child's comfort. This is because it provides that foundation of mutual trust, and can reduce the amount of anxiety. And, of course, visits early on help monitor the child's oral health. This prevents tooth issues from going unnoticed and becoming worse, including early childhood decay.
Dental anxiety in children is a very valid concern and also completely normal. At Avira Dental, we're committed to fostering a child-friendly environment in the clinic. Creating a more comfortable experience through gradual exposure.
From the beginning of the dental experience, we ensure to use child-friendly language. Providing a lighthearted explanation to keep them feeling comfortable. We also engage in fun activities like counting teeth, or helping them into the dental chair. Alongside this, we incorporate fun accessories or decor, like toys and books.
Here at Avira Dental, we know that the very first dentist visits can also be hard for you. Which is why we'll walk you through every step. Making this new experience easier for both you and the child.
Here's what to expect with each visit:

Our dentists recommend scheduling a dental check up every 6 to 12 months. In the case of a higher risk of cavities, we may recommend more frequent check-ups. Our team will take a close yet careful look at the teeth, gums and the jaw. This general dental service also involves professional tooth cleaning, removing any plaque build-up.
In many cases, a standard clean isn't enough for teeth. If it's found that the teeth have significant decay or damage over time, we may opt for a dental procedure for kids. This can include both treating cavities and preventing cavities, which are very common in children. We do dental fillings on cavity affected teeth, and can also apply dental sealants that protect teeth from cavities.
This type of dental care is typically needed for a child 7 or 8 years of age. For more complex teeth conditions, our specialists will carefully assess this. Providing a comprehensive consultation process through our comprehensive dental exam. This is then followed by a corrective procedure, such as braces or Invisalign teeth alignment.
A tooth accident can feel overwhelming, we're here to alleviate this with our emergency dentistry service. Whether you're faced with a tooth being knocked out, or even a toothache, we're able to help. Providing a prompt diagnosis, which is followed by an optional temporary treatment and long term treatment.
*In some cases, sedation may be necessary during the dental service. Rest assured, our team will keep you informed on if this needs to be done before a procedure.
Child dental benefits are covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS.) This Australian program provides dental support over a two calendar year period, subsiding dental care for eligible participants. The program is designed to make dental care more accessible for children that are 0-17 years of age.
*Here at Avira Dental, we accept CDBS to be applied to dental billing. We recognise the importance of making dental care accessible, especially for kids dental health.
At Avira Dental, our experienced team brings years of expertise across a wide range of dental services, from implants and veneers to dedicated care for your little ones. Every service we provide meets the latest practices, ensuring solutions for patients of all ages.
With every visit, our team takes a tailored approach to meeting your dental goals. We do this by communicating transparently with you beforehand, including our steps to achieving a dream smile.
Our clinic is designed with kids in mind. From a warm waiting area to a gentle approach in the chair, we help children feel relaxed and at ease with every visit.
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend encouraging them to brush their teeth twice a day (Morning and night.) This should be done for two minutes, and ideally using a fluoride toothpaste to prevent any decay. We also recommend a diet with a moderate sugar intake and a focus on healthy foods.
Most children can start brushing by themselves at age 6 or 7. However, we suggest supervising them until age 8. This helps make sure they clean all areas well. Our team can assess your child's technique and let you know when they're ready to go solo.
If you've noticed that your child is struggling to eat or chew, we recommend getting in touch with our team. This is because it can mean that there are dental issues like tooth decay, weak teeth and even poorly positioned teeth. All these issues prevent the child from absorbing nutrients, impacting their health.
A dental home is more than a clinic. It's a place where your child feels known, cared for, and supported as they grow older.
